These were the words of Halvor Bakke - the mind behind the wonderful interiors and the tremendous transformations at Isfjord Radio.
His aim was to preserve and emphasize the historical aspects of the radio station, and at the same time create a cozy and relaxed feeling. He not only achieved both of these goals, but also managed to add a touch of luxury. You can feel the homely, timeless atmosphere around you and still feel a bit spoiled by the luxurious quality of the station.
In 2002, Halvor made a life-changing leap into interior design after working in the tourism industry for over 10 years. He is famous from Norwegian TV programs such as Dekor and Homsepatruljen ( Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), and as an interior design journalist working for Kamilla magazine. His latest achievement is a Norwegian TV series with Kathrine Sørland called “Styggeste Rom” (“The Ugliest Room”).
Several volunteers helped us to achieve our dreams
When Halvor first came to Isfjord Radio in July 2007, he was fascinated by the special light and colours of the Arctic: ice-blue skies and shining glaciers, different shades of grey on the stones along the beach, and silver patterns on the driftwood. When you look around at the station you can see how Halvor has managed to capture that special Arctic feeling, letting the interior reflect the magnificent landscape outside.
‘Touch of Madness’ is our motto on Spitsbergen, and even Halvor followed suit. He included some unexpected and exclusive details in his interior designs, things that don’t quite seem to fit 78 degrees north. He introduced luxurious touches like soft blankets, Italian scents, luxurious bathrobes, pillows from Gucci and a floor covering used by Giorgio Armani at their offices. Definitely the touch of Arctic luxury you need to top off your adventure in Spitsbergen. To read more about Halvor Bakke, you can visit his website at www.halvorbakke.no
