Nordenskiöld Lodge is unlike anywhere else on Earth — a hidden Arctic gem carved into the raw wilderness of Svalbard.
Here, exclusivity means remoteness. Far beyond the edges of civilization, this rare outpost offers not only a true digital detox, but the gift of presence — deep, quiet, and wildly unforgettable.

Adventure awaits in every direction, set against a landscape that few will ever witness. Inside, the lodge’s wide windows frame a scene that feels almost otherworldly: the mighty Nordenskiöld Glacier, glowing blue and alive with motion. Its cracks and thunderous rumbles are the soundtrack of this remote sanctuary.

This is where silence speaks volumes.
Where you rediscover stillness. And where the Arctic carves a lasting mark on your soul.

Day 1

Ready for a true Arctic adventure?
Your guide picks you up at 8:30 AM and brings you straight to our Expedition Centre in Longyearbyen. Here, we review the day’s route to Nordenskiöld Lodge, carefully chosen based on weather and snow conditions. Before departure, you’ll receive thorough instruction in snowmobile driving and Arctic safety, then gear up in insulated suits, boots, mittens, and helmets.

Then – the journey begins.
Leaving Longyearbyen behind, we head deep into the untouched Arctic wilderness. The route winds across glaciers and frozen fjords, through valleys, moraines, and silence. Along the way, your guide will find the perfect spot for a scenic lunch break – a chance to pause and take in the vastness around you.

After several hours of riding through the white wild, the towering Nordenskiöld Glacier comes into view. Nestled at its base, hidden between rocky outcrops, lies our destination: Nordenskiöld Lodge – your remote home for the days ahead.

Our welcoming hosts greet you with warmth and rustic charm, and once you’ve settled in, we gather for a delicious dinner, served with an unbeatable view of glacier, sea, and sky.

This is not just the end of a travel day – it’s your arrival at the edge of the world.

Day 2

After a hearty breakfast, it’s time to plan the day’s adventure with your guide and head back into the heart of Spitsbergen’s untamed wilderness.
Today’s route may take you across vast glaciers, past icy fjords, and through wind-carved valleys and mountains, all cloaked in brilliant hues of white and blue. Out here, miles from civilization, the silence is as striking as the scenery.

Along the way, your guide brings the landscape to life — sharing tales from Svalbard’s legendary trapper era, as well as insights into the geology, wildlife, and fragile ecosystems that shape this remote region. With every stop and story, your connection to the Arctic deepens.

We pause during the day for a hearty expedition-style lunch in the open, surrounded by nothing but snow, ice, and horizon.

In the afternoon, we return to the comfort of Nordenskiöld Lodge. After a full day outdoors, the warmth of the wood-fired sauna is a welcome treat. As the evening settles in, we gather for a well-earned Arctic dinner, rich in local flavors and shared stories.

This is Arctic exploration at its finest — raw, rewarding, and utterly unforgettable.

Day 3

Breakfast is served at 08:00, and then it’s time to fire up the snowmobiles for one final Arctic ride.
Today we begin our journey back toward civilization, but the adventure isn’t over just yet. Based on the latest weather forecast and snow conditions, your guide will choose the best and most scenic route for the return.

As we travel through the sweeping white wilderness, we’ll stop for an expedition-style lunch surrounded by the silence and serenity only the Arctic can offer.

And who knows — with a bit of luck, we might catch a glimpse of the King of the Arctic, the polar bear, before rolling back into Longyearbyen in the afternoon.

A powerful ending to an unforgettable Arctic journey.

Clothing and equipment

Pack as little as possible for this trip. We recommend a waterproof backpack of around 35-42 liter. Your bigger luggage can be stored at your hotel while you are out exploring.

Necessary clothing in the Arctic is woolen thermals as the base layer, warm wool or fleece trousers & sweater on the top. Two layers of socks (thin & thick woolen socks), windproof layer on the top. Spacious clothing is recommended because air is the best insulation. Windproof mittens with a warm liner or thick gloves, a warm hat, scarf or flees- tube is also a must have in Svalbard.

We recommend bringing indoor shoes or extra woolen socks to Nordenskiöld Lodge. Leisure wear/ casual clothing for dinner, toilet articles, sunglasses, sunscreen (not based on water because of low temperatures, binoculars to spot and study the wildlife, photo camera, contact lenses if you normally use glasses).

Note

Driver’s License

All drivers of snowmobiles on Svalbard must be able to present driving licenses for passenger cars/class B, and the driving licenses must be issued in a country that is a party to the Geneva Convention of 1949 or the Vienna Convention of 1968 on road traffic. The driver’s license must be valid in the issuing country. Your driver’s license must be presented before the tour starts. This trip requires minimum two snowmobile drivers without passengers. We may also need to change the number of drivers and passengers in the group. This is in terms of safety reasons.

Physical requirements

This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains or pregnant women. This is due to safety for your safety and wellbeing, and Basecamp Explorer can unfortunately not to take responsibility for health problems if this advice is neglected.

A snowmobile expedition to Isfjord Radio is a long and physically demanding journey, requiring participants to be in good physical shape. For safety reasons, we do not recommend this trip for participants over the age of 70. If in doubt, please reach out to us for guidance and recommendations at spitsbergen@basecampexplorer.com.

Language

Safety is our top priority during our trips. It is necessary for you to be able to communicate in English or a Scandinavian language if you want to join our excursions. The tour language (English or a Scandinavian language) will be chosen based on the group’s language skills.

weather conditions in svalbard

In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms or thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planned route, and this might result in not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.
