Adventure Week

Join us on a unique adventure to the Nordenskiöld glacier! On this trip you will be cast far away from Longyearbyen right into the heart of the Arctic and our Nordenskiöld Lodge. The Lodge itself is perched at the edge of the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier. With no running water or electricity, Nordenskiöld Lodge is a true expedition cabin, but with modern comforts. We use wood to heat up the cabin and boil running water from the glacier to drink. There are five big bedrooms with a fantastic view, 10 comfortable beds, an indoor toilet and a traditional sauna. The cabin is modern and comfortable with big windows giving away to the mighty glacier.

Hidden in the glacier moraine, the cabin is hard to spot even for the initiated few who knows its sheltered location. Take a moment to soak up the exquisite arctic silence. Enjoy your breakfast while overlooking the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier, or relax on the sunny terrace with a cup of coffee. If you are lucky, you can spot a polar bear or a ring seal basking on the drifting sea ice. During Adventure Week, we will embark on several excursions in the area surrounding the Nordenskiöld cabin. The choice of destination and activities will be determined by the weather conditions. We will do our very best to make sure you get to experience all the activities listed in the Adventure Week program!

Day 1

The guide will pick you up at your hotel at 8AM. We will go through today’s program and give you an important safety briefing before we start making our way to the expedition base and afterwards to the harbour. We recommend that you only bring one bag on the trip, as the storage space on the boat is limited. Other luggage can be stored at your hotel in Longyearbyen.
The Isfjord Ekspressen will take us to Billefjorden and Adolfbukta. Isfjord Ekspressen is a closed boat, for your comfort.

During summer, the fjords will be teeming with wildlife, and you will most likely encounter the devoted boat-followers known as northern fulmars, as well as the occasional puffin. You might also get to see walruses, belugas or even a polar bear! Once at Nordenskiöld cabin we will enjoy an outdoor lunch and get familiar with the cabin and the surroundings.

After lunch it is time to head out into the arctic nature and explore the beauty of the isolated outpost. We return to the cabin in the evening, where you will be served a delicious dinner and get to enjoy a pre-heated sauna. Accommodation in double rooms.

Day 2

The day begins with a solid breakfast, before leaving the comforts of the Nordenskiold Lodge. We zip up our dry suits and slide into the calm water in steady and reliable double kayaks. We paddle in pairs. Kayaking is the perfect way to get around in the Arctic and is probably the ultimate way to explore the Arctic shorelines. Today’s destination will be determined by the weather and sea conditions, as well as your paddling skill level. We will paddle next to the magnificent glacier front among floating pieces of glacier ice, while being observed by the curious wildlife.

After a long day of paddling in a cold, arctic sea, the comforts of a warm sauna and a proper meal will seem very tempting.

Day 3

Today we will head out to the majestic Nordenskiöld Glacier. After breakfast we will go through the basic guidelines and safety precautions associated with glacier hiking. We will set out to explore the heavily crevassed glacier that is situated only 1,5 kilometers from the cabin. We spend the day hiking up and down the glacier, exploring the ice formations and enjoy the magnificient view. We will eat expedition lunch on the glacier. If the weather is nice, we will make a bonfire once back at the cabin, and simply cherish the view of the fjord.

Day 4

Enjoy the last breakfast at Nordenskiöld Lodge this time. We suggest you take an extra cup of coffee and rest your eyes on the ice blue glacier. The boat back to town will pick you up at 10 o’clock.

We travel to Longyearbyen with Isfjord Ekspressen, and get some good experiences at sea on the way home.

We recommend that you take an overnight stay at our characteristic trapper’s style Basecamp hotel, and let the impressions from Nordenskiöld Lodge sink in. Memories for life.

Clothing and equipment

Mandatory clothing in Svalbard is woollen top and bottoms as a base layer close to your body in one or two layers, depending on weather. You will need warm wool or flees trousers & sweater as mid-layer and a wind- and waterproof layer on top. Spacious clothing is recommended since air is the best insulation and you will be wearing several layers even in the summer. When sitting down for lunch or outside in the evening we recommend to bring a down jacket to keep warm.

For the Nordenskiöld adventures you will need a steady pair of shoes that can support you in unrouged terrain and keep your feet dry and warm. On your feet we recommend two layers of socks (thin & thick woollen socks), warm and windproof mittens and medium warm gloves, a warm hat (wind proof) flees- tube, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect you form the strong sun when spending the whole day outdoors.

Good to have with you to the lodge is indoor shoes, comfortable leisure wear, toilet articles, binoculars to study the wildlife and views, camera (and something to protect it from water), a backpack of around 35 litres for your extra clothing, food and water during the day activities and hikes. We spend one day in kayak, and a waterproof pack bag for your camera and water bottle may be good to bring in the kayak. Do also remember swim wear for a dip in the bay and sauna!

Physical requirements

This trip requires good physical condition. The trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. Pregnant women cannot participate on any snowmobile, dog sledding or boat safaris arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp takes no responsibility to any health issues, due to neglecting this advice.

Safety is our top priority during our trips. It is necessary for you to be able to communicate in English or a Scandinavian language if you want to join our excursions. The tour language (English or a Scandinavian language) will be chosen based on the group’s language skills.

Weather conditions in Svalbard

In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms or thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planned route, and this might lead up us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.
