Adventure Week

Join us on a unique adventure to the Nordenskiöld glacier! On this trip you will be cast far away from Longyearbyen right into the heart of the Arctic and our Nordenskiöld Lodge. The Lodge itself is perched at the edge of the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier. With no running water or electricity, Nordenskiöld Lodge is a true expedition cabin, but with modern comforts. We use wood to heat up the cabin and boil running water from the glacier to drink. There are five big bedrooms with a fantastic view, 10 comfortable beds, an indoor toilet and a traditional sauna. The cabin is modern and comfortable with big windows giving away to the mighty glacier.

Hidden in the glacier moraine, the cabin is hard to spot even for the initiated few who knows its sheltered location. Take a moment to soak up the exquisite arctic silence. Enjoy your breakfast while overlooking the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier, or relax on the sunny terrace with a cup of coffee. If you are lucky, you can spot a polar bear or a ring seal basking on the drifting sea ice. During Adventure Week, we will embark on several excursions in the area surrounding the Nordenskiöld cabin. The choice of destination and activities will be determined by the weather conditions. We will do our very best to make sure you get to experience all the activities listed in the Adventure Week program!

Day 1

Your guide will pick you up at your hotel at 8:00 AM, marking the start of an unforgettable journey into the Arctic wilderness.
We’ll begin with a safety briefing and a quick walkthrough of the day’s adventure before heading to the expedition baseand then on to the harbor. Please pack lightly — one small bag is ideal, as storage space on the boat is limited. Any extra luggage can be left safely at your hotel in Longyearbyen. And don’t forget your sturdy hiking boots — they’ll come in handy!

Your vessel for the day, Nordvest, is a comfortable closed boat, built to carry you safely across the waters of Isfjorden and into Billefjorden, heading toward Adolfbukta. As we cruise through these polar waters, be on the lookout for the wildlife that fills the summer fjords — northern fulmars, puffins, and perhaps even a walrus, beluga, or a glimpse of the elusive polar bear.

By midday, we’ll arrive at the legendary Nordenskiöld Lodge — a remote gem tucked beneath the mighty glacier that shares its name. After an outdoor lunch, we’ll take time to settle in and explore the surrounding wilderness with your guide, immersing ourselves in the raw beauty of this isolated Arctic outpost.

In the evening, we return to the cabin where a delicious dinner awaits, followed by a chance to unwind in the wood-fired sauna, perched in the silence of the moraine. Accommodation is in comfortable double rooms, and the night sky — even in daylight — will feel a world away from anywhere else on Earth.

Day 2

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast — today, you’re trading solid ground for Arctic waters.
After leaving the comforts of Nordenskiöld Lodge, we suit up in drysuits and slip into stable, double kayaks, paddling in pairs through the stillness of the High Arctic.

Kayaking is one of the most intimate ways to explore the polar wilderness, offering a silent and smooth glide along the glacier-strewn coastline. Our destination will be carefully chosen by your guide based on weather, sea conditions, and the group’s skill level.

You may find yourself paddling beneath towering ice walls, alongside floating glacier fragments, as Arctic terns soar overhead and seals or curious seabirds follow your journey. The silence is broken only by the rhythm of your paddle and the distant cracks of moving ice.

After a full day of immersion in the wild, the comforts of Nordenskiöld Lodge beckon once more. A wood-fired saunaand a well-earned dinner await — the perfect ending to a truly unforgettable day in the Arctic.

Day 3

Today’s destination: the mighty Nordenskiöld Glacier — your frozen neighbor just 1.5 kilometers away.
After breakfast, your guide will walk you through glacier safety basics and provide the necessary equipment. Then we head out into a landscape that few ever set foot on.

The heavily crevassed glacier awaits, with its surreal ice formations, deep blue veins, and towering ridges. We’ll spend the day hiking across its undulating surface, moving up and down the ancient ice, pausing to take in panoramic views over fjords, mountains, and the wide-open Arctic.

Midday, we’ll stop for an expedition-style lunch right on the glacier — a meal made unforgettable by its location.

If the weather is kind, we’ll light a bonfire back at the lodge, where you can warm your hands, sip something hot, and gaze out over the fjord as the glacier you just conquered looms quietly behind you.

Day 4

Savor your final breakfast at Nordenskiöld Lodge — at least for now.
We recommend pouring one last cup of coffee and soaking in the glacier view, letting the calm of this wild place imprint itself on your memory.

At 10:00 AM, Nordvest will arrive to take you back to Longyearbyen. The return journey is not just transit — it’s a final sea safari, offering one last chance to spot Arctic wildlife and reflect on the adventure you’ve just completed.

To round off your experience, we highly recommend spending a night at our characterful Basecamp Hotel, styled like an old trapper’s lodge. It’s the perfect place to unwind, relive the highlights, and let the magic of Nordenskiöld Lodgesettle in.

Some memories stay with you forever — this is one of them.

Clothing and equipment

Mandatory clothing in Svalbard is woollen top and bottoms as a base layer close to your body in one or two layers, depending on weather. You will need warm wool or flees trousers & sweater as mid-layer and a wind- and waterproof layer on top. Spacious clothing is recommended since air is the best insulation and you will be wearing several layers even in the summer. When sitting down for lunch or outside in the evening we recommend to bring a down jacket to keep warm. Remember solid foot wear, like hiking boots!

For the Nordenskiöld adventures you will need a steady pair of shoes that can support you in unrouged terrain and keep your feet dry and warm. On your feet we recommend two layers of socks (thin & thick woollen socks), warm and windproof mittens and medium warm gloves, a warm hat (wind proof) flees- tube, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect you form the strong sun when spending the whole day outdoors.

Good to have with you to the lodge is indoor shoes, comfortable leisure wear, toilet articles, binoculars to study the wildlife and views, camera (and something to protect it from water), a backpack of around 35 litres for your extra clothing, food and water during the day activities and hikes. We spend one day in kayak, and a waterproof pack bag for your camera and water bottle may be good to bring in the kayak. Do also remember swim wear for a dip in the bay and sauna!

Note

Physical requirements

This trip requires good physical condition. The trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. Pregnant women cannot participate on any snowmobile, dog sledding or boat safaris arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp takes no responsibility to any health issues, due to neglecting this advice.

Language

Safety is our top priority during our trips. It is necessary for you to be able to communicate in English or a Scandinavian language if you want to join our excursions. The tour language (English or a Scandinavian language) will be chosen based on the group’s language skills.

Weather conditions in Svalbard

In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms or thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planned route, and this might lead up us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.
