What to pack for Svalbard

11 March 2026

Despite its northern location, Svalbard has a relatively mild Arctic climate, especially compared to other regions at the same latitude. In winter, average temperatures in Longyearbyen are around −14°C, although periods of −20°C to −30°Care not uncommon. In summer, temperatures typically hover around 5°C.

Rain is rare, but fog, wind and low clouds are common. Even on dry days the ground can be wet due to melting snow and glacier water. Weather conditions in the High Arctic can also change quickly, and local variations can be significant.

For this reason, it is always wise to pack for changing conditions. Layered clothing is key: warm base layers, insulating mid-layers and a windproof outer shell will keep you comfortable whether you are travelling by boat in summer or exploring the winter wilderness by snowmobile or dog sled.

Good footwear, warm gloves, a hat and sunglasses are essential in all seasons. And remember, when travelling in the Arctic, it is always better to bring a little too much warm clothing than too little.
