A Royal Honor for Arctic Vision
On Friday, January 31, 2025, Brita Knutsen Dahl was awarded the King’s Medal of Merit for her exceptional contribution to Norwegian Arctic tourism, particularly for her dedication to preserving and transforming the historic Isfjord Radio.
Brita, former CEO of Basecamp Explorer and executive chairman of Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen until March 1, 2024, has been a driving force in redefining adventure tourism in Svalbard. When Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen took over Isfjord Radio in 2008, Brita saw not just a remote, abandoned radio station—but a story waiting to be told. Through vision, perseverance, and unwavering dedication, she led the transformation of this legendary communications post into one of Svalbard’s most extraordinary outposts.
Located on Svalbard’s untamed west coast, Isfjord Radio is now a place where Arctic history meets modern exploration. For over 30 years, Brita has championed nature-based tourism, and her efforts in evolving Isfjord Radio from a communications hub into a sustainable, experience-driven destination have set a new standard for responsible travel in the Arctic.
Her work has created jobs, driven economic sustainability, and—perhaps most importantly—ensured that Arctic heritage is not only preserved but brought to life for future generations.
Isfjord Radio stands today as a testament to what can be achieved when innovation meets cultural preservation. After two decades of relentless commitment, this outpost is not just a historical landmark, but a living, breathing experience—one that has left an indelible mark on thousands of explorers who have ventured to its rugged shores.
We are incredibly proud to continue Brita’s legacy by offering unforgettable expeditions to Cape Linné, ensuring that Isfjord Radio remains an Arctic sanctuary for discovery, reflection, and adventure.
The award was presented by Governor Lars Fause on behalf of the Norwegian Royal Palace, in a formal ceremony in Longyearbyen.
