Basecamp Explorer X Polar Bears International

Conservation

At Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen, we believe that experiencing the Arctic also comes with a responsibility: to protect and preserve it for generations to come. That is why we are proud to be an official sponsor of Polar Bears International (PBI), the world’s leading organization dedicated solely to the conservation of wild polar bears and their sea ice home.

Partnership with Polar Bears International

Basecamp Explorer works in partnership with Polar Bears International, a global non-profit dedicated to the conservation of polar bears and the Arctic environment. Through this collaboration, we ensure that our operations, guide training, and guest experiences are informed by the latest scientific knowledge. In addition, every guest joining one of our expeditions contributes a CO₂ fee that goes directly to support the work of Polar Bears International.

A shared commitment

“We are thrilled to be working with Polar Bears International to inspire travellers and the global community to take meaningful action for the Arctic. Our shared commitment to education and conservation ensures that every guest who visits Svalbard not only experiences its incredible wildlife but also becomes an ambassador for its protection.” says Birgitte T. Vegsund, Destination Manager, Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen.

Science-led operations in polar bear territory

Our partnership with PBI supports a responsible approach to Arctic travel. Guides are trained using science-based insights into polar bear behaviour, seasonal movement, and habitat sensitivity. This helps us minimise disturbance while maximising understanding and respect for wildlife.

For our guests, this means responsible travel guided by knowledge, respect, and awareness — offering meaningful Arctic experiences while helping protect one of the world’s most fragile ecosystems.

Join our PBI Expedition July 2026

In collaboration with Polar Bears International, Basecamp Explorer invites a small group of donors and explorers to join an exclusive summer expedition to Svalbard, next to the North Pole.

For ten days, you will explore Svalbard by both land and sea, combining remote wilderness stays with an expedition cruise along glaciers, fjords and Arctic coastlines.

Full itinerary to be found here.

Polar bears are a key indicator of the health of the Arctic.
Protecting them starts with understanding their world.
