Welcome to Nordenskiöld Lodge – a premium Arctic hideaway at the edge of the world.
Tucked deep into the glacier moraine beneath the mighty Nordenskiöld Glacier, this is the world’s northernmost commercial lodge – and arguably its wildest.
With only a handful of guests at a time, the experience is intimate, exclusive, and deeply personal. Hike across ancient blue ice or paddle in complete stillness beneath towering ice walls. Keep your eyes open for seals, belugas, and moments of awe.

It’s Arctic purity, elevated – and entirely yours.

Day 1

Ready to begin your Arctic adventure?
At 8:00 AM, your guide will meet you in the hotel reception and walk you through the itinerary for the weekend ahead. You’ll have time to pack your essentials into a smaller, waterproof bag — we recommend leaving excess luggage safely stored at Basecamp Hotel.

Don’t forget to bring sturdy hiking boots — you’ll need them when exploring the glacier!

Then it’s time to head down to the harbor and board Nordvest, our comfortable closed boat built for Arctic waters. As we travel through the fjords, keep your eyes open — this time of year, the seas are alive with Arctic wildlife, from flocks of seabirds to walruses, seals, and perhaps even a passing pod of belugas.

Upon arrival at the remote and beautiful Nordenskiöld Lodge, we’ll enjoy a warm lunch with a front-row view of the mighty glacier. In the afternoon, we head out on foot to explore the moraine landscape, with your guide sharing stories of glacial history, local wildlife, and the unique geography of this high Arctic outpost.

As evening falls, we return to the lodge. There’s time to unwind in the sauna, soak in the silence, and prepare for a delicious Arctic-inspired dinner — the perfect end to your first day off the grid.

Day 2

Today is glacier day — a true highlight of your Arctic escape.
After breakfast, your guide will introduce you to the glacier equipment and cover the essential safety routines for the day ahead. Everything you need will be provided. From the lodge, we begin our journey with a short hike — about 1.5 km across the moraine and a small river crossing — before stepping onto the ancient ice.

We’ll spend the day navigating the glacier, hiking across ridges and crevasses, exploring surreal formations sculpted by time, wind, and water. Few places on Earth offer a more dramatic setting for an outdoor expedition lunch — with sweeping views across Adolfbukta and Billefjorden, this is scenery that stays with you long after the journey ends.

Did you know that over 60% of Spitsbergen is covered by glaciers? You’re now walking on one of its most iconic.

If weather conditions allow, the adventure continues with an afternoon kayaking trip along the glacier front — a magical chance to glide past floating ice and keep watch for curious seals popping up to say hello.

Back at the lodge, the sauna will be warm, the view still stunning, and a well-earned dinner will round off this unforgettable day on the ice.

Day 3

Enjoy your final breakfast at Nordenskiöld Lodge — for now.
We suggest pouring an extra cup of coffee and letting your gaze linger on the ice-blue glacier one last time. At 10:00 AM, Nordvest will arrive to take you back to Longyearbyen, offering a scenic journey filled with Arctic seascapes and perhaps a final encounter with wildlife along the way.

To truly round off the experience, we recommend an overnight stay at our characterful trapper-style Basecamp Hotel. It’s the perfect place to reflect, relax, and let the impressions from Nordenskiöld Lodge settle in.

Because some adventures deserve to be remembered slowly.

Clothing and equipment

Mandatory clothing in Svalbard is woollen top and bottoms as a base layer close to your body in one or two layers, depending on weather. You will need warm wool or flees trousers & sweater as mid-layer and a wind- and waterproof layer on top. Spacious clothing is recommended since air is the best insulation and you will be wearing several layers even in the summer. When sitting down for lunch or outside in the evening we recommend to bring a down jacket to keep warm.

For the Nordenskiöld adventures you will need a steady pair of shoes that can support you in unrouged terrain and keep your feet dry and warm. On your feet we recommend two layers of socks (thin & thick woollen socks), warm and windproof mittens and medium warm gloves, a warm hat (wind proof) flees- tube, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect you form the strong sun when spending the whole day outdoors.

Good to have with you to the lodge is indoor shoes, comfortable leisure wear, toilet articles, binoculars to study the wildlife and views, camera (and something to protect it from water), a backpack of around 35 litres for your extra clothing, food and water during the day activities and hikes. Do also remember swim wear for a dip in the bay and sauna!

Note

Physical requirements

This trip requires good physical condition. The trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. Pregnant women cannot participate on any snowmobile, dog sledding or boat safaris arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp takes no responsibility to any health issues, due to neglecting this advice.

Language

Safety is our top priority during our trips. It is necessary for you to be able to communicate in English or a Scandinavian language if you want to join our excursions. The tour language (English or a Scandinavian language) will be chosen based on the group’s language skills.

Weather conditions in Svalbard

In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms or thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planned route, and this might lead up us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.
