Join us on an open RIB boat fjord safari through the bright summer in Svalbard. On this half day excursion we explore the hidden treasures of the Arctic ocean and the surrounding mountains.

Program

The adventure starts when your guide picks you up from the hotel. We will quickly go through todays program, destinations and activities. Once the flotation suit has been put on and zipped shut, we will head down to the harbour.
We travel across Isfjorden with open RIB boats. On the safari we are looking to see Arctic birds, walruses, seals, belugas or bigger whales.

Clothing and equipment

Despite Spitsbergen’s northern location, the archipelago has a relatively mild climate compared to other areas on the same latitude. In summer, the average temperature in Longyearbyen is approximately 5 ° C. There is normally very little rain, although it is not unusual that there is fog and low clouds. Cold wind is usual even during the summer season. The weather on Svalbard changes quickly, and local variations can be huge – so it is better to have little bit too much clothes with you. We provide flotation suit, boots and life jacket. We recommend that you bring thick woolen clothes to wear underneath our protective floatation suits. We also recommed to bring a windproof hat and gloves, as well as neck varmer or scarf. Sun protection and sun glasses is also a necessity. You can also bring an extra layers of clothing in your backpack, a water bottle and snack. Size of bag up to 40 L, preferrably water proof.

Note

Physical requirements

Open RIB-boat safari is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. Pregnant women cannot participate on any snowmobile, dog sledding or boat safaris arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp takes no responsibility to any health issues, due to neglecting this advice.

LANGUAGE

Safety is our top priority during our trips. It is necessary for you to be able to communicate in English or a Scandinavian language if you want to join our excursions. The tour language (English or a Scandinavian language) will be chosen based on the group’s language skills.

WEATHER CONDITIONS IN SVALBARD

In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, rough sea or thick fog. This means we might need to make changes to the planned route, and this might lead up to changes in the planned adventure program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.
