Do-Good & Environmental Investment
Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen supports Basecamp Explorer Kenya. Together we are one of the most innovative and rewarded tourism operators within sustainable tourism!
In Spitsbergen all guests can join our Do-Good projects with 250 NOK per person. This enviromental investment is automatically added to all overnight trips in Spitsbergen. Other guest staying at Basecamp Hotel in Longyearbyen and joining daytrips can participate in the project by paying the investment at our reception.
We use the investment to balance the carbon footprint created by your air travel to the high arctic. The amount is donated in its entirety to Basecamp Explorer Foundation projects and used to safeguard the incredible nature, wildlife and people in Maasai Mara – the most important wildlife ecosystem on the planet. Each year we hope to channel NOK 250,000 to this purpose.
Through the investments Basecamp Explorer Foundation maintains different projects in Maasai Mara. Our tree planting project was established in 2000, and by September 2019 we have planted over 177 000 trees. The aim of the project is to revive the Talek river ecosystem by addressing the pressing issue of deforestation and ground erosion. Read more about the project.
In addition to the tree planting, we are also using the investment to preserve the large wildlife sanctuary of 50,000 acres north from Maasai Mara National Park. The land is called Mara Naboisho Conservancy hosting few selected safari camps and leased from over 500 local families. By preserving a large area of pristine nature, we help to secure that the existing C02 in the ground continues to be stored, as well as new quantities of CO2 are captured through natural growth.
